If you've got a backyard or driveway court, you've got more lighting options than you might think, and most of them don't need any wiring work at all.
Solar stake lights
These are probably the cheapest way to get some usable light around your court. You just push the stakes into the ground around the edges and let them charge during the day. They're not going to light up the whole court on their own, but they help mark the boundaries and add some ambient light, especially paired with glow balls.
The downside is they're not super bright, and they depend on getting enough sun during the day to charge. If your court is shaded for most of the day, you might not get much out of them.
LED string lights
A string of outdoor LED lights run around the court perimeter, maybe strung between a fence and a couple of poles, gives you a lot more usable light than solar stakes. They plug into a regular outdoor outlet, so no electrician needed as long as you've already got outdoor power nearby.
This setup works especially well if you want the court to double as a fun hangout space, not just somewhere to play. String lights add atmosphere on top of actual visibility.
Blacklight floods
If you're leaning into the glow pickleball look, a couple of blacklight flood lights aimed at the court can do double duty. They light the area enough to see by, and they make any glow balls, UV tape, or glow gear pop a lot harder than they would under regular light.
What to avoid
A few common mistakes worth skipping:
- Lights pointed straight at players' eyes. Aim lights down or to the side so they light the court, not the people on it.
- Cheap extension cords left across walking paths. Run cords along fences or tape them down flat if they have to cross a path.
- Relying on one light source. If your only light burns out or runs out of charge mid-game, you're stuck. A backup, even just a porch light nearby, is worth having.
