The essentials
These are the things you genuinely need before your first night session. Everything else is a nice-to-have.
Glow balls
This is the single biggest upgrade for visibility. Get at least one pack so you've got a backup if one rolls off into the dark and you can't find it right away.
Some kind of court lighting
Whether it's existing park lights, solar stakes, string lights, or a blacklight setup, you need enough light to see the ball and avoid tripping on anything.
Nice to have, not required
LED paddles
Fun for the look, doesn't actually improve visibility much. Good for parties and league socials, less needed for serious play.
UV reactive tape
Great for marking court lines or trip hazards if you're running a blacklight setup. Also doubles as cheap decor for a fundraiser or party night.
For a bigger league or event
If you're running this for more than just a few friends, a couple extra things help a lot:
- A backup light source. Phone flashlights work in a pinch, but a battery powered lantern is more reliable for a longer night.
- Extra batteries. If your balls or paddles run on batteries, bring spares. They run out faster than you'd expect during a busy night.
- A simple sign-up sheet or schedule. Night leagues fill up fast once word gets around, so it helps to have a system for who's playing when.
